Funerals are supposed to be quite moments where family and friends reunite in remorse. But this was not to be in ‘Death at a funeral’. Instead the funeral ends up in washing of dirty linen in public.Amazing that the most dreaded word should evict such laughter, is it not! Since when did death constitute a recipe for great comedy? This only happens in ‘Death at a Funeral’. This remaking of the 2007 British movie comedy of the year which is directed by Frank Oz is a true success. It is bound to leave you cracking your ribs. Only this time, the setting is an urban City of America.
From the time the death of their father is announced, and the elder son takes charge of the funeral planning process, the comedy begins. Each of the relative is just a bag of laughter. No one seems to be sane. It emerges that each of the persons involved is driven by either self ego or self gain. Arguments about who is not adequately provided for in the will are hilarious. The emergence of lovers in death and the mysterious dwarf man who claims to have very important information all add to the comedy.
The accidental death of one of the mourners leads to a new wave of comedy. He is buried alive and when the eulogy is being read, he resurrects in a great leap. It takes the controls of the elder son to finally deliver a complete eulogy though it is clear that the old man was shrouded in a myriad of secretes.
Let not the title deceive you, there is no sadness in watching ‘Death at a Funeral’ it is all fun and laughter. It is bound to keep you glued to the screen.
